Classes Offered:

We offer a wide range of beginner, intermediate and advanced classes to meet your needs. These include dozens of specific project courses including designer cabinets, benches, chairs and bookcases to name a few. We also help you focus on skill development, whether associated with a tool type or technique, like specialized sanding and finish work. And beginners aren't left out with a wide variety of specialty classes in wood turning, boxes, or, just how to get around and set up your shop.

Woodworking 102 - Parkland College

Description:  

This class is intended for those who have taken Woodworking 101, or have had some previous experience with woodworking tools. Students will learn how to safely use the jointer, planer, tablesaw, miter saw, band saw, drill press, and router table to build an attractive Country Cabinet with Towel Rack.

Students are encouraged to bring their own safety glasses and hearing protection.

Festool User Course #2 Non-Track Technology

Description:  

This course is the second of two courses that are comparable to the Festool end-user factory training and is geared toward power tool users who have a basic knowledge of the Festool System from Course 1, Fundamentals of Track-Tool Technology. In Course 2 students will learn the rationale and techniques for using the balance of the main tools in the Festool system approach to woodworking.    This is a hands-on class in which each student will have his own tools to practice with.

Step Stool

Description:  

Construct a Shaker-style stepstool using only hand tools. The method of joinery will be hand-cut dowtails using constrasting woods (walnut and maple) to show off the dovetails. The class will cover hand-planing, scraping, sanding, glueing, clamping and trimming, plus a few tricks for fixing mistakes.

Novice to Intermediate Woodworking skills recommended

Nightstand in the Arts and Crafts Style

Instructor:   Jeremy Taylor
Dates:   June 3 thru June 7, 2013

Description:   This class will teach how to build a solid wood, one drawer nightstand with hand-cut dovetails through the use of various hand and power tools.  The class will demonstrate basic milling procedures using the jointer, planer, and drum sander.  It will teach an accurate way of cutting and fitting mortise and tenon joints using the tablesaw, band saw, router, cross-cut hand saw, chisels and shoulder plane.  The drawer will be made of solid wood, including the bottom and the joinery used for the drawer front to sides will be hand-cut dovetails. The back of the drawer will be joined to the sides using a sliding dovetail joint.  A router table will do this task.  And finally, the appropriate hand-planing, scraping and sanding will be carried out to finish up the project. nightstand

Pen Turning

Description:  

Skilled craftsmen have been using the lathe for woodturning for centuries. Students will use basic spindle-turning skills to turn and assemble a beautiful wooden “slim-line” (7mm) style pen while learning the components used, such as pen kit, pen blank, mandrel, pen mill, and pen press. Each student will take home a wonderful pen to use or give as a gift to someone special.

Woodworking 101 - Parkland College

Build an HeirloomWorkbench

Description:  

If your desire is to build heirloom quality furniture, you must first have a quality workbench!  Join us in the CU Woodshop School of Woodworking’s well equipped shop and build your own classic rock-solid hard-maple work bench.  Building this bench is a very challenging project.  You are going to earn your workbench with hard work and dedication to the task at hand. 

We will start with 120 bd ft. of rough 8/4 maple and 30 bd ft. of 4/4 & 5/4 walnut lumber.  Participates will be using the jointer, planer, table saw, compound sliding-miter saw, mortiser, drill press, sanders, and hand tools to complete this masterpiece.   This is one of the heaviest best built benches available today.   The top will be 1 ¾” thick with 5 ½” sides, 24” wide and over 79” long.  The legs and stretcher system is massive with a handy shelve for storage. We use 12” heavy duty quick release hardware for the two vises.  Every woodworker needs a good bench!

 
Cost:   $670 plus material and vise hardware cost of $1200 to $1400 at CU Woodshop Supply.  Upon registration, you will be sent a materials list that you can use select and purchase your lumber and hardware prior to the start of the class.

New Lebanon Shaker Blanket Chest with Drawer

Description:   This beautiful Shaker Blanket Chest is a faithful reproduction of a chest from the New Lebanon Shaker Community. This large dovetailed chest sits on a dovetailed plinth and has a large outside accessible drawer, and on the inside a lidded till and drawer. shaker blanket chest
Cost:   $960 tuition plus materials costs of approximately $450, depending on wood selected. A materials list will be sent to you several weeks before the class starts so that you may select and purchase your lumber and hardware.

Build Your Own Kitchen Cabinets

Description:  

Participates will help build a lower and an upper kitchen cabinet as a class project and get hands on experience in building face frames, carcasses, raised panel doors, and dovetailed drawers.  If you are considering building your own cabinets this introduction will help start you on your way.

Students are encouraged to bring their own safety glasses and hearing protection.

Hand Carved Lettering

Description:   This class will teach the hand-carving of letters. It will start off with demonstrating how to transfer letters to the work piece, selecting fonts, and include the technique of letter carving using only bench chisels and gouges. The students will be able to pick their favorite quote to carve or are encouraged to bring their own quote to carve.

Craftsman-Style Tall Display Cabinet

Description:   The honest exposed joinery of the Craftsman style is evident on this tall display cabinet. Constructed using book-matched panels in mortise and tenon frames all connected together with true through tennons. We will also take a sample quarter- sawn white oak board through the entire finishing process that results in that famous dark brown Craftsman finish.
